Is Berserk 2016 a Remake or Continuation

Felt like I watched a series of PS2 cutscenes.

I decided to watch Berserk 2016, and oh my God, what did I just watch? Let me start with the elephant in the room: the visuals.

The visuals are jarring at best and flat out disgusting at worst. The use of CG didn't pay off at all. People complained about Sailor Moon Crystal's use of CG, but even that was leagues better than any of the visuals I saw in Berserk. The animation was just as bad, as the characters didn't move smoothly and felt clunky overall. But to make it worse is the direction of the camera, it was disorienting, sloppy, and caused me to lose track of what the hell was even happening. Makes me question if the director knows anything about the basic rules of film making.

Now, I do understand why they went with CG, as they wanted to try and replicate all the little details, but even so, it was clear that the people beyond the animation had little to no experience with 3D modeling/animation. I have seen better cutscenes on the PS2 than this.

The story to me wasn't that bad, but nothing that special either.

Overall, the story is okay, but the visuals were trash. The first two season of Sailor Moon Crystal were also trash, but got significantly better at season three. Hopefully the same can happen with Berserk.

A classic franchise betrayed by terrible art and animation.

The long awaited continuation of one of the most acclaimed animes of all time is hard to watch due to atrociously bad CGI/animation, angles, and worse editing. Luckily the story remains somewhat true to the books so it was able to hold my attention but just barely as every time a character opened their mouth you lose focus on the story as immersion is completely broken.

Just how bad is the animation? Well, it reminds me a bit of 15-20 year old kids cartoons. We also had similar quality in cut scenes back in the N64/PS2 days. Now imagine if those cut scenes were the focus of the games and you will have a good idea of what this anime is like. Its almost like sabotage. If younger folks watch this without seeing the originals they will disregard the entire franchise from here on.

Anyway, like stated above, it still follows the books as best it can so by virtue of having a good manga, this one still gets a rating of 7 from me which makes it better than average overall. Thats how good the berserk story line is. In the future, they should definitely wait until they have enough money to get a quality animator.

It's literally just the bad animation

I love the classic and I love the manga. I heard so much about how bad and disappointing this adaptation was but didn't start watching until recently. First, the source material is very deep and hard to mess up. Second, The storyline works as a good follow up to the old anime. Third and most importantly, The animation just sucks and you'll have to get over it to enjoy it. The main problem is they tried a form of animation that does not blend with anime. The flashback scenes are in the classic anime style and look amazing. Possibly better than the original. The computer generated stuff has its moments of glory. The problem is when they try to use this new animation while maintaining an anime feel. Spoiler! Experiment fail. This 3-D CGI effect does not work with classic anime. That's the whole issue. If you can get past the fact that the animation is going to suck most of the time, you might just enjoy this spectacular storyline.

An inept adaptation of strong source material

This in an awful, low-budget adaptation made by a team that I can only assume has no idea what it's doing. It all but makes a mockery of Miura's fantastic manga art. It also lacks the great soundtrack of the 1997 adaptation.

The animation is truly awful, with the human characters moving stiffly and awkwardly. The cinematography is atrocious. The camera is constantly, unnecessarily panning, the shot selection is puzzling, the rule of 180 is consistently ignored. Typical action scenes in Berserk feature the camera swooping through the scene and rapidly cutting and repositioning for no good reason while your eye struggles to follow the action. There are several shots in which it is literally impossible to discern what's taking place. In addition to this, the art is incredibly bland, featuring unfinished-looking CGI that looks like it belongs in a cutscene of a Final Fantasy game from the '90s.

I can only assume that such an adaptation was made by a team with a very low budget and very little experience in crafting a visual narrative. To top it off, the soundtrack is putridly stereotypical, featuring generic heavy metal that only goes further in proving this team was consistently shooting to make something that looks "cool" rather than putting any effort in telling a compelling story.

This is really only worth watching if you're a hardcore fan of the manga, otherwise it's not worth your time. Incredibly disappointing. Hopefully they find a different studio to continue this series rather than just completely canceling it, though after two seasons I'd honestly rather see it cancelled than continued in such a horrible fashion.

2 stars on the strength of the source material alone. If you're interested in Berserk, read the manga instead. This trash isn't worth the time it takes to watch.

Unable to watch

Why would anyone rate this over a 5, I do not know, but this anime clearly shouldn't have been released. Either people are trolling when rating this or half blind, because the animation and CGI is barely done. This makes Seven deadly sins season 4 on Netflix look like a masterpiece. It literally looks as if the creators were 50% done on the animation and decided to give up on it because this is horrible. Nevertheless the story, the picture takes away any remaining quality to this anime. Do not watch.

How many insults does the masterful manga deserve?

I have been a decade long fan of the manga, have a tattoo to prove it, and now ask myself why Berserk adaptations peaked in 1997. The preceding films quickly fell apart and i don't know which manga GEMBA is adapting in the first 2 episodes but I sure as hell have never read it. Nor do I want to! First with the good:

A pure CG approach, or a combination, is valid on paper and the only way to go on a midnight budget, if the manga's scope is to be reached. Especially in today's problematic anime scene but what we got is less Clone Wars or Knights of Sidonia (let's ignore the dumb writing) and more comparable to a middling PSX cut-scene. Some good shots and camera movement are featured but those are few and far between. The returning VAs are fine and Susumu lastly wrote a new song. That's it.

My viewing experience of the pilot reminded me of the time I accidentally discovered sleep paralysis. My eyes were darting all over the place due to the lack of basic direction and my body wanted to revolt but NO emotions came. Just the understanding that something was very, very wrong. This isn't a TV show, not even a working print, it's upside-down broken. Can the soundtrack and the sound effect be even called that? I know that Shirō Sagisu can compose if he is given direction but this is even worse than the films. Did a deaf man put it together? Why is the CG quality constantly switching and why are some characters drawn and then 3D modeled in the same scene? Pick a style! The shape- and motionless background characters even remind me of 80s hentai. Being ugly and an affront to my ears isn't the core problem though. Where is the passion? And more importantly ANY characterization. The decade long adaptation project now lack a backstory for both the protagonist and antagonist. Apostles, who are the raison d'etre for our Black Swordsman, are be being skipped left and right, while entire arcs now remain "lost". The worst offender though has to be the incomprehensible opening animation. I don't care about the bland song but the ugly, bewildering and frankly tasteless nature make it the least comprehensible piece of animation i saw in years and i have graded 2500+ pieces of animated content on ANN and 2400+ on IMDb. I lastly suspect that what we got to see since 2012 is a deteriorating attempt to get foreign investors interested in the larger IP by creating continuous online buzz, while promoting the new game (another mess in the making) and Vol. 38/39. An inexpensive sizzle reel that just can't stop.

2016 has worse anime to offer but you will need to look at (pseudo) hentai to find it. Is this where we are now? Actually no. Kuon Michiyoshi produced a somewhat interesting 2 part Bersek hentai doujinshi that is better than anything "official" fans got to see since the PS2 game. My only conclusion thus has to be: The films and this sequel are worse than porn.

a heartless product

Berserk is my favourite manga of all time, so to see it getting a anime this ugly is just an insult, the author of berserk spent years of blood and sweat to earn his success and producers saw how successful the manga was and decided to make an anime without heart or respect to the manga, by the way I don't hate the anime just because its 3D and i get as to why they use 3D but it looks so terrible its obvious that they didn't try, composition is terrible, sound effects are terrible, they even changed the dialogue so the main character sound edgy and even cut some important scenes, the anime is heartless and none card if the anime was good or not, when the producers read the manga they didn't see the love and care that want to the story and characters and art, they saw how much money they can make from the fans that love the manga.

They killed it :"(

The original story, screen, fighting, anticipation of every story, and then this... Some tipe of CG droving with mouth that's not moving accordingly with speaking... And every moment of story is one on top of the other... 2 star just for the original... This is zero!

If you can sever all ties between this and the original, it may be worth a watch, if nothing else, to hear a new story involving Guts

If you loved the original Berserk (1997) manga adaption as much as I did, you'll no doubt be drawn to this long anticipated continuation

As a preface, this series lacks everything that made the original series great:

A sense of relatability with these flawed but human characters, an emotional, beautiful musical score, and a well-paced story with haunting glimpses of the unknown within an otherwise realistic world.

On a positive note, the new series does contain some new characters of intrigue and sheds some light on some elements from the original series that weren't fully explained.

As a negative, the story moves too fast in contrast to the original. Any recurring characters from the original are barely recognizable, having lost the original personality traits that defined them, making us hard to care about them. Lastly, the CGI animation is atrocious to say the least, just watch the trailer on youtube.

But ultimately, as a whole I got very little enjoyment/fulfillment from the series and at times found myself forcefully trudging through just to get to the end. .

The bottom line:

If you are a Berserk fanatic, but not a manga reader and simply MUST see where the story goes, it is worth a watch. Just take it with a grain of salt that this new series shares just the title of the original, but none of the same substance.

Distractingly horrid animation buoyed by its source material

Only for those desperate to see more Berserk. What can be said about the animation that hasn't already been said? The 2D is fine, even great sometimes, but it's a shame we hardly see it in motion. The constant camera moving, which includes large amounts of quick panning and cuts to hide the bizzare CG animation, is headache inducing.

A spit in the face of Berserk and its fan base.

This series had so much potential to be great. I will start off by saying that the visuals in the FLASHBACKS using 2D manga style animations, look fantastic. I'd argue even better and more true to the manga than the 1997 version. EVERYTHING OUTSIDE of the flashbacks though, is a travesty. It being CGI is already a mockery of what Berserk is hailed for. A masterfully drawn manga hailed for its visuals. CGI disrespects everything artistically that made Berserk beloved. But even for CGI, this CGI work and animating is sloppy, ugly, disjointed, and lazy. An anime well regarded for its CGI in the anime community for being easily the best CGI anime in terms of quality would be Land of the Lustrous. It is considered a universal standard for how all CGI anime should look. It is fluid, clean, unique. The choreography for the fight scenes has amazing cinematography using techniques found in action movies. Land of the Lustrous boasts in every aspect what Berserk 2016 lacks in its animation, and that is the entire reason this adaptation tanked and gets clowned by not just the Berserk community, but reviewers / journalists alike.

Avoid this adaptation like the plague and just read the manga, or just wait for something of better quality to hopefully eventually come around.

It's quality content despite obvious flaw

I need to get this out there; This show IS good, but you need to get used to the animation. It is not as horrid as some people say, it's more of a hate/love thing in accepting the fact that it IS 3D with some frame rate issues. Quite frankly, once I decided to watch it no matter what, the 3D didn't really bother me too much. I was more interested in continuing Guts' adventures than nitpicking the animation apart.

Don't misunderstand me, I've no idea why they simply didn't do a good 2D animation on this and continued the 1997 story straight off the bat, and as such it is a flawed product. But definitely not flawed enough to deserve being called 'ruined'. That's childish.

This show continues the story of Berserk and is definitely for people who've seen the original 1997 animated series. It's dark, grim and surprisingly funny for such as dystopian tale. Guts slaughtering his way through mounds of enemies and facing all sorts of impossible challenges, all the while having to watch 'weaker' people die around him, is exactly what I wanted, and exactly what I got.

Looking forward to season 2! (Though seriously, whoever made this, considering improving your 3D drastically or switch over to 2D.)

A Big, Big Let Down After Watching The Original Series

The animation for the original series was always a bit choppy like it was missing frames here and there but the CGI and horribly drawn animation of the 2016 series practically makes this unwatchable. Seriously the drawing of characters, backgrounds etc are like they were drawn by a 2 year old that hasn't learned to colour inside the lines yet and no detail anywhere. The colouring is awful as well, washed out and bland. I can't believe this new series got the go ahead in its current state. This one one anime series that definitely needs a remake to do it justice.

Why ruin it?

Awfully rendered CGI characters on average backgrounds, actually the characters look so bad that they make the backgrounds look beautiful in comparison(they're really not). Each character seems so stiff and lifeless that even a 50 year old shoe could show more emotion. When they talk there's no emotion or muscle movement on their face at all, except the mouth, the rest of their body staying still and staring into nothingness. When performing fast or even normal movements everything looks really jerky and rigid, like the plastic action figures we used to play in our childhood. Because they are so lifeless it's pretty hard to care for them, or even to get involved in the story at all. I've been a huge fan of the old series and I can get past many things, I'm an easily pleased person but this is so bad, even lowering your expectations you'll probably still get disappointed. I have not read the source material yet but I've seen various panels from the manga and almost each one is a hand drawn masterpiece, this 2016 adaptation brings so much dishonor to it. I thought the 2012- 2013 Berserk CGI adaptations were a setback but I would gladly watch those over this pure crap. If they keep going with the same CGI crap, the show is ruined.

WORST ANIME EVER MADE is and understatement

If you have seen the original berserk from 1997 then this is without any exaggeration unwatchable, I am beyond belief of how bad this is. This is not berserk, its a anime but not berserk, guts is now a thin anorexic dude. Every part was more bad than the other, the story doesn't make any sense it's a total mess, there is no serious dialogues or interesting scenes, it jumps in to different scenes every 30 seconds, there is no structure to the story whatsoever. So many random characters with stupid scenes, and somehow the director found it very important to include a fairy that turns into a cute pokemon figure ever 2 minutes, and the music background music in this is extremely annoying, I really don't get it how how they managed to make this bad. I honestly can't describe how bad it is. But I could go on forever pointing out everything bad about this so called berserk. I tried to watch it back in 2016 but couldn't watch more than half of it, and gave it a chance again and got reminded of how bad this is. And stopped again at episode 9. It is unwatchable.

Long awaited series is Back

The long awaited series has finally aired, well their is no problem with this anime its good gore and and the Savage Guts its an entertaining series. The only problem this series has is CGI but if you ignores it they won't make Berserk all colorful anime well its a dark fantasy anime full of blood and gore so CGI seem like suit its at some point but overall its an entertaining series. If you are into violence anime then this anime is for you. Yes the people give it low rating because of CGI and skip a lot of material from manga but if you have watch Berserk 1997 anime and three film of Berserk then they skip a lot of material from manga to I think its not that big deal. Its a must watch series and I can guarantee you that you won't be disappointed if you just ignore the CGI in this anime then you will love this series.

Maybe too high expectation

I liked the original series from 1997 and i consider the movies to be one of the biggest shittiest anime movies ever produced. But i tried to stay positive for this followup anime series. Well...

The writing is stiff but it would be "ok". Despite couple of moments, the Berserker manga or the original anime is not some dialogue heavy art. Music + sound is something that is stiff as well and that's not OK. I think music and sound overall in the original anime was something that connected everything together, having the right songs for changing the pace of the plot was absolutely brilliant. Here is nothing. Voice acting is also missing, i would call it robotic reading instead. Art-wise, i don't like this CGI style for the monsters. Ugly, ugly, ugly! But i could get over it. It kinda fits the theme. But screenplay doesn't help the animation in any sort of sense. Unless something changes significantly, i don't expect this will be popular and i will still hope that somebody else will pick Berserk up and create something entertaining.

Ruined by 3D animation.

Anime itself is not the worst it is not great but atleast okay to watch as a sequence. But seriously disappointed with the anime style the 1997 had the best anime style and it's better not to ruin the classics either should have continued as is or shouldn't have touched it.

BAD computer animations here and there

I LOVE the old Berserk anime from the 90's and I was so excited for this new anime and the continuation of this epic saga.

Sadly this show gets ruined by some BAD computer animations and it's so bad that I can't watch it till the end.

I really hope that Berserk will get a nice looking continuation but for me (and from what I've been reading a lot of other fans of the old classic) this isn't it.

Cheap production

This is very cheap and awful production it is a disrespect of the manga level of art. If they made it with the same anime tech that they used in the 90s version it will be 1000000x better. I dont know who did made the decision but it should be considered one of the biggest mistake of anime adabtation i realy hope that another company take the story and make snother anime, or just lesten to the fans and take their openions into consideration, but on second thought if they really care about the fans they woul have never made it that way. I gurrantee that the producer isn't an anime fan he only care about money and he just made the mistake of his life.

The cg is an aweful tech i dont know why it is a trend.

Just No is the correct heading or this series

There is a Lot of strange history about this show. An unexperienced director and writer that used to do kiddie-nonsense anime's, and so on, and it Shows the inexperience in this series. the Entire 1st season is badly shot, framed, scored, characterized, and on and on. the 3D animation is some of the Worst, and Ugliest, you'll ever see. The Pacing revs like a chainsaw and swings around like a hula-hoop. It's Bad, and they should have Seriously reconsidered their Entire strategy.

It's strange also that most of the guys that did the Movies Also did the series, and the Series used heavy blending of 2D and 3D: 3D for the action-intensive stuff, and 2D for most everything else, and it was Good. The Movie arc was a great addition, 7/10 for me, not as good as the 1997 version, but still good! Why did they Change something that was fundamentally solid and most everyone liked? I don't know 1 person that loves anime that would Ever say that 2D animation should be cut Completely from a show. the stark contrasts, the shadows, the realistic skyboxes and backgrounds... this was Art. Some would even use Paintings from Artists as backdrops and use 2D Over the backgrounds. There is No Art in Berserk 2016.

Filler Constantly, all the dialogue is terrible, there is no real connections with the characters or people, and you feel like you don't know Anything about them by the end. Quick, sloppy, awful. The Only reason it gets a 2/10 instead of a 1/10 is episode 4 where he has flashbacks of his time in '97, specifically the movie Arc series, but This is the blend of 2D and 3D that made the Movies so good. But, again, Quick, Sloppy. the entire second half is garbage and is almost unwatchable, But that first 15 or so minutes is just a callback to what it Could have been. Although, if the story was precisely the same I still would Not like it, because the story was just Terrible, nonsensical, and borders nonsense and stupidity. I did like the times he met certain characters he was searching for, and that battle in the swords was cool, but the show was just a Failure. It Failed because it had bad people at the helm that ran it into the ground. Such a shame.

Horrible attempt at reviving a classic anime title

First of all the art and cgi is extremely bad, most amateur artists could conjure up something better than this.

Other than the repulsive animation the overall execution is lazy, no depth, it feels amateurish and cheap.

The camera angles are bizarre making it even harder to keep your eyes on the screen.

Hopefully it can get cancelled as fast as possible, lets forget this ever happened.

It's really sad to see a classic anime get this kind of revival, this is not a worthy successor at all and I think most fans of Berserk and of anime will be very disappointed with this pathetic attempt.

An awful made anime from the way to tell the story to the animation..

Where should I start? I'm a big fan of Berserk, the 1997 show is my favorite anime ever. I've read the manga and I hope it ends someday, it's fantastic and well made in all aspects, except that it's been too long since it started.

This anime show not only has bad art and visuals generally, I could live with that. The music isn't really good. The way to tell the story in this anime is just poor, all they do is present important parts of the story quickly one after another without slowing down for a moment and having the characters talk to each other so you can get to know them a little more and understand what is really going on.

The planning and editing of this show is a very horrible thing, they have hundreds of shots every episode with cuts all the time. You can't even appreciate the fights because they cut every 1, 2 or 3 seconds in order to save themselves animation work.

And that gets me to the final thing, the animation. There are video games from Play Station 2 that have better character animation than this series. Everything is really poorly animated, in CGI you can't have the characters just frozen like in 2D. Every character in the show looks very stiff and doesn't move naturally.

You could compare this with anime like Knights of Sidonia or Ajin, those are really poorly animated also, just a little less. But at least those told the story in a more interesting way and take time to develop the characters and explain things.

In conclusion, I don't know how this came to be. The creator of Berserk had a lot to do with the 1997 anime dialogues, I can't really think he had anything to do with this because of the poor way the story is told.

At least they tried?

They took a masterpiece of a manga and made an unbearably bad CGI anime adaptation. Not the way to go. There's no proper voice for the incredible manga. At least they tried I guess.
